Along the Champagne Route – Electric Grace and Living Vineyards

Along the Champagne Route - Electric Grace and Living Vineyards

Champagne vineyard

A living interpretation of Champagne’s iconic vineyard landscapes

In the heart of Champagne, among protected hillsides and villages that seem untouched by time, you settle into a fully electric Citroën E-Mehari and follow the gentle curves of the Champagne Route at an easy, unhurried pace. Here, the landscape sets the rhythm. So does the land itself.

The day begins at first light. Morning sun brushes across vines still tipped with dew. The E-Mehari moves forward in near silence, open to the air. You feel the freshness on your skin. Earthy scents rise from the soil. Every subtle shift in slope and light becomes clear.

At the wheel is Isabelle. A native of Aÿ, she has spent her life among these vineyards. Trained in art history and heritage studies, she worked for years as a guide before creating her own wine-focused journeys through Champagne. As you drive, she points gently to what might otherwise go unnoticed – the angle of a hillside, the way wind moves through a parcel, the shape of a village. These quiet details explain why each area of Champagne expresses itself differently.

Leaving Épernay behind, you follow small country roads until the luminous slopes of the Côte des Blancs come into view. Chardonnay thrives here, rooted in pale chalk that lies just beneath the surface. This porous stone holds water deep below and returns freshness to the vines in dry moments. Even from the road, you sense the clarity and lift that define the wines born on these hillsides. In a nearby village, a quiet stop offers the chance to meet a grower and share a few glasses – a simple, genuine exchange that puts a human face to the landscape.

As the scenery shifts, forests begin to frame the vineyards. You have reached the Montagne de Reims. Parcels feel deeper, more sheltered. Pinot Noir dominates these broader slopes. From carefully chosen viewpoints, a mosaic of vines unfolds below – hills, clusters of stone houses, narrow roads weaving through the countryside. Here, the wines gain structure and depth, shaped by sun exposure, wind protection, and the subtle contours of the land.

Further along, the terrain softens as you follow the Vallée de la Marne. Vines descend toward the river. Soils grow more humid. The slopes relax. Pinot Meunier finds its voice here, bringing generous fruit and roundness to many Champagne blends. From your open seat, these differences are easy to read. Gradually, Champagne becomes less a name on a map and more a living territory.

A pause in Hautvillers invites you to wander flower-lined streets before stepping into the village church, where Dom Pérignon rests. Soft light and quiet stone lend the founding story of Champagne an intimate tone.

As afternoon light turns golden, the E-Mehari glides once more through sunlit hillsides. What began as a scenic drive becomes a deeper understanding of how landscape, climate, and human care come together in every bottle. This is a thoughtful, unhurried experience – an invitation to observe, to listen, and to meet Champagne at its own pace.
